Comrie fountain was constructed as a gift to the people of Sydney from Mrs Sophia Comrie, a twice wealthy widow, most lately of James Comrie, merchant, pastoralist and member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. The fountain was originally installed in 1904 at a prominent location in central Sydney, near St James Church and Hyde Park.
There are several philanthropically donated drinking water fountains around inner-Sydney and these served an important purpose of supplying clean drinking water to Sydneysiders. The Comrie fountain is notable for also having an intended purpose of supplying drinking water to horses and dogs. It was moved to Moore Park in 1934.
