It's a great time to plant a garden! There's lots of ways to do it right, whether in a pot, windowsill planter or traditional garden. Follow these steps to get you started:
1. Choose a spot that receives a lot of sunlight
2. Make sure your plants have space to grow their roots. A plant will be only as big as its roots. Consider making a raised bed if you have the space for it!
3. Soil matters. You will need fertile, well-draining soil to make sure your plants can grow. Soil is full of nutrients that fuel plant growth. Just like the right food fuels us. Add organic material and fertilizer to provide an extra boost of nutrients-- it's great plant food!
4. Don't crowd your plants. Space between plants allows for air flow, limits nutrient competition and reduces the risk of pests and diseases. Remember, plants can get sick, just like you and me!
5. Make sure to water your plants and keep the soil moist. Water is an important nutrient for humans, animals and plants alike!
6. Prune your plant regularly down according to the size of your planting space. This encourages growth by directing nutrients to fewer end points.
7. Watch it grow! Don't forget each county has resources like the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Master Gardener's to help you if you have pests, issues or concerns.
