Janet Werner (born in 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian artist based in Montreal, celebrated for her incisive and playful representations of female figures.

Since the 1990s, Werner has been exploring fictional portraiture by manipulating found fashion photographs, cutting, rearranging, and transforming them into paintings. Her composite characters question themes of gender, representation, and psychological vulnerability, while also evoking humor, imagination, and seduction.

Her work challenges traditional portrait conventions, imbuing anonymous figures with fictional personalities through the iconic power of the image. Often beginning with collage, she juxtaposes disparate elements to reveal ideas of displacement, rupture, and layered narratives.

With VSC Bonfire (2017), Janet Werner continues to delve into these themes, creating a piece that merges transformation and introspection.
