This next photograph depicts the Great Hall in 1870 (Fig. 6), one of the first structures completed in 1859.[2] Much like the Main building, the Great Hall reflects the founder’s appreciation for the ancient universities of England through the choice of decoration.[3] The stained glass windows here, although difficult to see in the daylight, include tributes to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, in addition to representing the monarchs of Britain.[4] Stone carvings around the interior of hall display images of Queen Victoria, and many crown emblems are repeated throughout.[5] In addition, 12 carved wooden figures of angels were placed inside and hold items that reference the arts and sciences.[6]

Take a look at the sloped roof. This feature was chosen to resemble the roof of Westminster Hall in London.[7] Looking at the photograph, it seems as if nothing much has changed. However, one feature you might have noticed is the angel on the top of the roof is not there today. This was an angel of knowledge and was removed four years after this photo was taken in 1874.[8]

Today, the Great Hall is used for a wide range of University events, from graduation, live music, plays, exams, and lectures.[9]  When you are ready, head towards science road to reach the next stop on the tour.
