The second Ring of Walls.
After the conquest of the castle from the Moors, Afonso Henriques entrusted its care and defense to the Knights Templar, who undertook extensive restructuring and new construction. To safeguard the surrounding population, their livestock, and crops, a second line of walls was erected, indicating a sizable community in the castle's vicinity.
In 2014, a significant restoration project restored a section of the wall while adhering to principles of minimal intervention, authenticity, and compatibility with original materials and techniques. A 355-meter stretch connecting the Santa Maria path to the Casa de Guarda do Castelo was fully renovated, with towers now serving as scenic viewpoints following structural rehabilitation efforts.
