The Compass Rose - Or Hidden Message?

Art, or homage? The beautiful Compass Rose is a giant, walkable art installation depicting a compass. However, some say the Compass Rose embeds a much smaller "key" - a round, glass-art dial that features Des Moines iconography. Could it just be a coincidence - or a very clever confluence of artist and civic arts commission - that the center line of this key, standing perpendicular to the horizontal, appears to point precisely in the direction of the beach on Maury Island where Harold Dahl ran his boat aground on June 21, 1947, to hide in the cliffs and avoid the falling slag from the sky.

Compass Rose is the first of many Des Moines art installations that appear to provide much more than first meets the eye.
