This 16th century oak chest on your left was the parish coffer. It had three locks with three keys kept by the priest, the church warden and the overseer of the poor. This meant that all three had to be present to open it. It would have held all the important documents plus perhaps donations since there is a slot in the lid.Many copies of these parish documents relating to the Poor Law, Indentures, and inter parish correspondence from the early 18th century are kept in the Heritage Centre.
