When we consider the first time that Jesus stumbles and falls while carrying his cross, it leads us to consider the ways we erect barriers to accessibility. Too often we unconsciously design buildings, streets, and other infrastructure in ways that prevent safe and free passage for those with mobility challenges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2 billion people live with a disability, 20% of whom live with great functional difficulties in their day-to-day lives. This includes 61 million adults in the United States, or roughly about 26% of the adult population. 13.7% of the US population lives with mobility challenges meaning they have serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs. That is more than 1 in 10 persons.
As we meditate on Jesus’ first fall, we need to ask ourselves, if Jesus had mobility challenges, would he be able to enter our church, our homes, our schools and places of business? Would he be able to navigate our streets and steps?
