El Monte Steps from Bridgeway

El Monte (The Mountain in Spansh) may have been what the locals referred to the high "Hill" between Old Town and New Town in the early days.  But today, the lanes official name was dervied from the Grand El Monte Hotel that opened on Bulkley Ave in 1880.  The original El Monte Hotel had over 100 rooms & cottages, and in the day was the center for social and political life in Sausalito until it was demplished in 1904..   The lane Which was the walkway from downtown to the El Monte Hotel, has survied but the land around it was subdivided to build the First Presbyterian Church at 120 Bulkley.  Some the original old El Monte cottages also survied and are now residence along the upper path.

El Monte Lane is middle for the downtown's 3 perperndicular stairways.  You can find it on the Westside of Bridgeways next to Poggio's.   The lane is 10 feet wide and 220 concerte steps and a walkway.
