HISTORY
Long before Sausalito had its first European permanent resident, shoreline and cove was already on most shipping charts. International sailing ships began arriving into Richardson Bay in the early 1800s, drawn by freshwater springs, protected anchorage, and timber for repairs. Most prominent among them were the great American whaling fleets — hard-driven ships out of New York and New England, rounding Cape Horn in pursuit of sperm whale, the most valuable cargo in the world. By the 1820s, Sag Harbor on Long Island had become one of the largest whaling ports in America, while the Hudson River cities of Hudson, Poughkeepsie, and Newburgh had launched their own fleets into the Pacific. In 1826, a British naval officer documented seven American whalers anchored right here in Richardson Bay. The New York ships — out of Sag Harbor and the Hudson River cities — were among them, their crews a diverse mix of Yankees, freed Black men, and immigrant laborers including Italians working the maritime trades of the East Coast waterfront.  From this location we reach back 200 years to honor the men from the North East who braved all risk for their livelihood and visited the same waters we see today.
