Instruments of Music & Optics - Double Flute

Leonardo, a wonderfully talented musician, introduced improvements to many popular musical instruments, making them more automatic, simplifying their playing technique and creating new sound effects.
He designed improvements for the flute, incorporating keys and opening finger holes along its length. The designs for wind instruments in this illustration relate to a series of court performances that Leonardo produced to celebrate the marriage of the nephew of the Duke of Milan with Isabella of Aragon in 1490.
