Leonardo paid great attention to the transmission of rotary motion. Here, he investigates the use of chains rather than ropes. A mechanical system with two toothed wheels, connected by a chain at a set distance and in the same vertical or horizontal plane, produces greater efficiency and is safer than if ropes are used to move heavy loads.
The system can also be used for producing the discontinuous back-and-forth motions found in the mechanisms of clocks.
