Welcome to Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, one of over 500 refuges. From the depths of the Pacific Ocean to the forest of New England, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) mission is to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. In the future this refuge may grow to 11,000 acres of restored tallgrass prairie.
As you drive, take note of the numbered bison signs. They correspond to the tracks on this audio tour. We ask that you buckle up and pay close attention to the road (animals crossing are often the best way to see wildlife up close). Once you enter the bison and elk enclosure, DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE.
Through this 10 stop tour, we hope to inform you about what makes this refuge a jewel in the crown of conservation. Thank you for visiting and let’s get started.
