World Hunger

He returned to public service in 1998 and did a three year stent as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture, serving in Rome, Italy. The George McGovern and Robert Dole International Food for Education and Nutrition Program was created in 2000 and funded through Congress. The program provided more than 22 million meals to children in 41 countries.

In 2000, President Clinton presented McGovern with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2001, McGovern was appointed as the first UN Global Ambassador on World Hunger by the World Food Program and he continued on as a goodwill ambassador with this program until his death. In 2006, the George and Eleanor McGovern Library and Center for Leadership in Public Service was dedicated at Dakota Wesleyan University.
