In 1870 Mary MacKillop uncovered evidence of abuse by members of the church. She was eventually ex-communciated in an effort to silence her. This lasted for 2 years. In 1872 Mary was absolved and officially returned to the church. Mary travelled to Rome and returned 2 years later with official Papal approval to continue her work within the community. In March 1875 Mary MacKillop was elected Superior General of the order.
