Joe Riche - The Doom 06.09.11

Both sculptures are made via digitally designed, CNC cut, fabricated and painted carbon steel.
They were digitally designed by making a 3D block of the approximate scale I wanted to build in a 3D design program called Rhino. We then applied a Voronoi tessellation script that divided the block into multiple unique polyhedral forms. Next, we treated it like a traditional subtractive method by deleting and re-adding back the individual poly forms till what was left had a composition that intrigued me. We discovered the sculpture inside of the flat faced block form, same as a stone carver would.

The next phase was to apply a labeling system to each part and flatten every poly form to a 2D parts nest that could be CNC cut with a laser or waterjet. We essentially received a kit of parts from the CNC cutter that was fairly easily assembled in the metal fabrication shop.
Originally created for an exhibition at Republic Plaza in Denver, from inception to install was less than 2 weeks.
