Moorish Castle

At the top, on your left is an imposing image of the moorish castle. It was built in the 10th century during the Muslim occupation. The main function of this fortification was mainly surveillance. In 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon by KingĀ Afonso Henriques, the castle was delivered voluntarily.

With the advance of the territory to the south, this castle was losing importance. At the end of the 15th century it was occupied by Jews who were forced to live separately from the rest of the population. However, with the extinction of religious orders and the expulsion of Jews from the country, the castle was definitively abandoned. With the earthquake of 1775, the original structure was ruined and only in the nineteenth century did KingĀ Fernando II carry out extensive reconstruction works.

Nowadays the castle still retains the charm of an ancient ruin, with a dense forest around the walls, offering spectacular views of our beautiful region.
