City Hall

The current building replaced the previous municipal facilities, which operated in the Newsmuseum building.

The construction of a new town hall became necessary due to the accelerated growth of the settlement, determined in large part by the inauguration of the Lisbon-Sintra railroad in 1887. The City Hall building was precisely designed to serve the historic center and the new Estefânea neighborhood, being erected in the place where a 16th century hermitage of the invocation of Saint Sebastian once stood.

A project by the architect Adães Bermudes was chosen for the building. The works started in 1906 and ended in 1909, resulting in a picturesque mansion, perfectly suited to the romantic atmosphere of the village.
