The history of Jones Station actually begins with the building of the railroad. In 1846, Brownsville began constructing narrow-gauge railroads connecting Brownsville to cities to the east and west. After the railroad was completed, four acres of land were donated to be used as a shipping point. The Jones Station Post Office was located next to the Holly Grove Community on the north end of Dr. Hess Road here in Haywood County. The post office was opened in 1869.
This exhibit was donated to the museum by Marilyn Booth in memory of Vernon C Booth who was the postmaster from 1914 until his retirement in 1945. It was also a tribute to the memory of Olive M Booth, who was the postmaster from 1946 until it closed in 1953.
Although trains do not stop at Jones Station anymore, the sound of wheels rumbling over the iron ties can still be heard.
