Miners’ Union Hospital

High on the hill in front of you is the Miner's Union Hospital. The owner of the Morning Star Mine built this house at the base of the mine sometime after 1865. He declared bankruptcy soon after and gave the house to his lawyers in payment of fees. They sold the house to another attorney who added a porch and piped in water, making it one of the nicer homes in the area. In 1897 the Miner's Union purchased the building and converted it to a hospital for disabled and infirmed miners. Dr. William Schuyler lived there and had his office in the building at that time. It served as a hospital until 1908. It is now a private residence.
