Engels' Manchester - A Revolutionary Walking Tour

To mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Engels this special walking tour of Manchester will follow in Engels' footsteps.

We will start our tour outside the Science and Industry Museum on Lower Byron St.

Engels' Life.
Frederick Engels was born in November 1820 in what is now Germany, and came to England to work at his father's factory 'Ermin and Engels'

In September 1842 Frederick Engels got off the train at London Rd Station Manchester. He was hit by the deafening noise from the thousands of steam powered engines that powered the mills and the acrid smell of the smoke from a thousand chimneys. Manchester was Britain's 'first' industrial city.

Engels learnt much about industry and labour during his time living and working in Manchester. His experiences in Manchester helped shape his revolutionary politics.

After 20 months Engels returned to the continent. He met Karl Marx in Paris. The two became inseperable friends, revolutionaries, and life long collaborators.

Engels would return to Manchester to work as a partner in his father's business, in order to be able to make enough money, for the upkeep of the Marx family.

Karl Marx, as well as his daughter Eleanor, visited Engels in Manchester.

In 1870 Engels left and moved to London. He lived in a house just a short walk from Karl Marx.

This is a walking tour of Manchester. It will take you to places that Engels visited, and wrote about.

You can download the tour and listen at home or while following the route in person. Each stop is accompanied by a short informative talk. Best bring an umbrella if you are physically walking the route. The guided walk takes about 1 hour. It is a wheelchair accessable route.
