Max Gabel, who was born in 1877 in Gorlice, Western Galicia, became an eminent Yiddish actor and playwright in America.
Due to his father's passing in 1888, Gabel cut short his studies and went with his mother and sister to a sister in America. Here he soon entered into work in a cup factory, and in his free hours he learned German and English on his own.
Max Gabel is credited with having written 114 plays, mostly melodramas and adaptations of Broadway successes. His first play was "The Sea King," which was performed in New York in 1895.
Later on he managed Gabel's Star Theatre and other New York playhouses.
He wrote and produced plays for his wife, the actress, singer, writer and producer Jennie Goldstein whom he married when she was sixteen. These plays included "Girl with a Past" and "Everything for Love."
The couple starred together in his plays, and Gabel's productions enjoyed extended runs.
He toured with his wife until they divorced in 1930, and he retired to California.
