As you head toward the Castle, notice on the hill where the gazebo sits. The Castle was fitted with marvels rare for the times. The lights were powered by gas, and the water came from a well they had built. Seven bathrooms, six fireplace-equipped bedrooms, servants quarters connected to the kitchen, a ballroom that would echo with music and festivities, an elevator, and two turreted towers would stand the test of time to this day.
Mrs. McCrea was the castle’s original landscape gardener and was hired by Mr. Henderson to decorate the grounds. Overseeing the entire project was W. Welch of Kalamazoo. It is no wonder it was dubbed the “Queen of West Main Hill”
The Hendersons had a grand housewarming party in 1895 complete with a parade from downtown Kalamazoo to the Castle. Next stop is in our main lobby, please head that way.
