Sad Ripu and Teeth Filing

In Bali, Hindu individuals undergo a rite of passage called the mepandes ceremony  (tooth-filing) (also referred to as the metatah rite). It is a symbolic act of purging an individual of the negative traits known as the Sad Ripu (six enemies): Kama (lust), Lobha (greed), Kroda (anger), Moha (anxiety), Mada (conceit) and Matsarya (envy). Special attention is paid to the canines, which are a symbol of humanity’s animal nature.

This recent photo shows young women undergoing the Mepandes. This coming-of-age ceremony is celebrated when the family deems the child has become an adult. It is an important family event and, at times, a community event, involving several young adults.
