Teeth Whitening Industry

Consumers interested in whitening their teeth currently have access to a variety of different types of products, including whitening toothpastes, whitening strips, introduced in the late 1980s, peroxide-based gels, whitening rinses, tray based tooth whiteners and in office treatments. The latter generally use higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, which mean that the gums have to be protected from irritation during treatment. Lasers are sometimes used in conjunction with these treatments to acclerate the chemical reactions involved, though whether they are actually beneficial is unclear.

Tooth whitening has been a growing industry in recent years. According to Statista, the global tooth whitening market was worth about 6.14 billion dollars and is forcasted to grow to about 8.21 billion dollars by 2026. New innovations in tooth whitening have sought to reduce or eliminate the use of hydrogen peroxide as a common active ingredient in bleaching treatements, as the chemical is known to cause enamel damage and gum irritation, among other potential drawbacks.
