To be a cowboy, you had to have a ten dollar horse and a forty dollar saddle. Look at the wages a cowboy made at the r2 in 1885, not even a dollar a day. The R2 was the first ranch built along the Pease River. Headquartered in Henrietta, the R2 was the only local ranch to drive cattle to Kansas and Montana. The owner, W.B. Worsham, withdrew from the ranch when the open range came to an end from barbed wire fencing the land. His forman ran the ranch until 1920. This is a display of some of the many types of barbed wire. The ranchers did't put up fences to keep their cattle in but rather to keep their neighbors cattle out.
