Flatwoods, The High Ground

You have just traveled through a mixed Pine-Palmetto Flatwoods / Hammock to the Three Lakes trailhead. The Saw Palmetto (Sereona rapens) and Slash Pine (Pinus ellioti), are the defining or keystone species of this ecosystem. In the absence of fire, oaks and Sabal Palm will slowly take over and transform the ecosystem.  Downy Rose Myrtle continues to crowd out the native species.  There are few of the Southern Live Oaks.  In   The presence of Braken Fern is an indicator of high ground.

Turn right and to follow the white arrows around the trail loop.  As you continue on the path orange Batchelor Buttons color the trail. The pictures will show you other Flatwoods plants to look for;  the Wax Myrtle, shiny blueberry, and rusty lyonia.
