Seeds of Community

Seeds of Community, created by Color Squad, is located on 1203 Barton Springs Road. These murals depict various colorful plants juxtaposed against silhouettes of people. The silhouettes contain inspirational quotes about gender independence, loyalty to one’s personal identity, and queer positivity. Color Squad’s teams maintained communication with queer organizations all throughout Austin in order to source their quotes and gain more insight on the unique struggles that the queer community faces. The team utilized programs such as the UT Austin Center for Gender and Sexuality, Kind Clinic, and OutYouth. The result was a beautiful series of figures that demonstrate their pride, self-confidence, and identity. Though the Gender and Sexuality center at UT Austin no longer exists, its impact still lives on through this art. Seeds of Community is best represented as a series; a reminder that we are beautiful, and no matter what, we are not alone. Think about the people in your life who support and advocate for you. If your personhood was at risk, how much would you need them?
