Agricultural Biology is a one year, laboratory science course, designed for the college-bound student with career interests in agriculture. The course will emphasize understanding the principle ideas and concepts through lecture, discussion, and student presentations of the following topics: Molecular and cellular aspects of life, chemical and structural basis of life, cellular metabolism and energetics, genetics and inheritance, DNA structure and gene technology, evolution and natural selection, ecological relationships between plants, animals, and humans, taxonomy, interrelationships of kingdoms of organisms, and physiology and anatomy of major animal phylums. The course is centered around an extensive laboratory component (including microscope work and dissection of organisms) in order to connect the big ideas of life science with agriculture applications, earth and physical science principles, and other curricular areas including written and oral reporting. FFA or community service activity assignments will be given to enhance citizenship and leadership qualities.
