Wessyngton Plantation

Hey Y’all this is Kevin Mead, the president of Community Spirit Inc. I am so excited to take you on our SMOKE: A Ballad of the Night Riders pre- show, driving tour that has been sponsored by Payne Chevrolet who has been serving Robertson County since 1926. Please note that all of the homes on this tour are privately owned. Please stay in your car at all times.

Oh what a web we weave never rings more true than in Robertson County, Tennessee. Our story starts in 1796 when 26 year old Joseph Washington, the cousin of General George Washington, came to Robertson County, Tennessee from Virginia and founded his farm. In 1819, Joseph and his new bride, Mary Cheatham, completed their Plantation Home. The federal style, 2 story, five bay, red brick home stands, to this day, on the hill in front of you. Giving nodd to his surname, Joseph called the plantation Wessyington, the original saxon spelling for Washington. After Joseph's passing in 1848, his son, George A Washington inherited the plantation, and this is where our story starts to take shape. We’ll talk more at the next stop, but as you drive by, if you look up on the hill to your right, you can see the new owners of Wessyngton are completing an extensive historical restoration of the home.
