Fur trade

The Fur Trade

Becker County encompasses thick woodlands, miles of waterways, and prairies which were filled with fur-bearing animals. Furs were used for warm clothing from thick winter moccasins, to warm coats and robes, and winter hats and gloves. Large furs like bear, moose, and elk could be used for blankets and floor coverings. Later, furs also became a way to trade with incoming Europeans.

Europe had trapped most of their own fur-bearing animals to near extinction. Fur traders arrived in Becker County in search of furs from the wide variety of animals native to our area. They brought items to trade like metal kettles, woven fabrics, manufactured buttons, and knives, guns, and rifles.
