SWORDS, IRELAND

Welcome To Swords Castle

The site known as Swords Castle was built in the 13th century for the then Archbishop of Dublin, John Comyn and was meant to serve as his home as well as the home of all Dublin Archbishops after him. It is one of the best-surviving examples of an archiepiscopal palace in Ireland as such it is protected as a national monument. It served as the home of archbishops for around 100 years before it was later abandoned by Alexander de Bicknor, who built a new archiepiscopal palace at Tallaght in 13 24. Since then it has only been partly inhabited with the tower being used by the local constable. It was used as a rendezvous point by Anglo-Irish Catholic families during the 16 41 Rebellion. It would eventually fall into the possession of the Cobbe Family and then the Fingal County Council. For more information locate the other information boards found on the grounds.
