Linking all the buildings and towers in the castle is a 300 meters long pentagonal curtain wall. It encloses over an acre of land that slopes down to the Ward River and is between 3 and 10 meters in height. The curtain wall is made using limestone bricks that are bonded with lime mortar and was built in different sections. Although there are crenellations and battlements it is most likely that the walls were built and used to hold livestock, rather than defend against armies.
