Servant leaders immerse themselves in their communities to learn from and contribute to them. This is exemplified by the writer and philanthropist Pearl Buck, the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). She immersed herself in China, living among the ordinary Chinese people, to gain a deeper understanding and empathetic appreciation of their lives and culture.
