The Ghosts of the Parceland, Part 1

Henry DeLand also donated a mile-long stretch of land to serve as DeLand's main street, Woodland Boulevard. In the old photo above, you can see the first schoolhouse where we're standing now. Woodland Boulevard was originally 60 feet wide, with orange, magnolia, and oak trees planted down the center.

You might expect to find Henry DeLand's ghost in a haunted mansion somewhere in DeLand. Unfortunately for us, Henry DeLand didn't have a house here. He lived in his family's hotels: first the DeLand Grove House, on the site of today's Putnam Hotel, and later at the Parceland, where the new county courthouse now stands. (You saw the old historic courthouse earlier. The new modern courthouse is east of here at the other end of Indiana Avenue.)

Next location: Let's walk a block north for a look at the old Parceland Hotel. Head north past BerryVille and toward The Parched Oak restaurant.
