“Dreams of Prosperity”

These rooms introduced visitors to the world the Rains family hoped to create.

John envisioned a modern brick home like those he remembered from Alabama, while Maria wanted the open courtyard style common in Californio ranch homes. The result reflected both cultures.

The house featured innovations unusual for its time, including large windows, high ceilings, running water, and cooling systems that circulated water beneath parts of the structure.

The family also invested heavily in cattle ranching and vineyards. Cucamonga soon became known for wine production, and local tradition credits the Rains ranch with helping establish the region’s commercial wine industry.

But the family’s success was short-lived.

In November 1862, John Rains disappeared while traveling near present-day San Dimas. Days later, his body was found near the road. Historical accounts describe the murder as a robbery, though rumors of political or financial motives spread throughout Southern California.

No one was ever convicted.

Maria was only twenty-three years old and suddenly widowed with five children.
