“A House Built Between Worlds”
Welcome to the Maria Merced Williams and John Rains House.
Built in 1860, this was one of the most modern homes in Southern California. Its thick brick walls, shaded verandas, and central courtyard blended Californio ranch traditions with American architectural ideas.
The house was built by Maria Merced Williams Rains and her husband, John Rains.
Maria came from one of the most powerful Californio families in the region. Her grandfather, Don Antonio María Lugo, controlled vast ranch lands across Southern California, while her father, Isaac Williams, managed enormous cattle herds at Rancho Santa Ana del Chino.
John Rains came west from Alabama, reportedly working as a Texas Ranger and cattle driver before arriving in California. After meeting Isaac Williams, he began managing cattle on the Williams ranch.
When Isaac Williams died suddenly in 1856, seventeen-year-old Maria inherited great wealth and responsibility. She and John married shortly afterward and purchased this ranch in Cucamonga.
Together, they hoped to build a prosperous future in a rapidly changing California.
