Latitude 37° Art of Southern Colorado

Southern Colorado's unique history, scenery, and culture have been a source of imagery and introspection for centuries. This group exhibition features contemporary artists living within the 37th parallel, capturing a wide swath of Colorado's Southern-most cities. Works are a variety of medium and type, all celebrating the creativity and talent of the region.

Artists in Southern Colorado find themselves with a unique range of context and inspiration. The wide span of latitude line 37° N marks Colorado’s Southern border and includes the high reaches of the Sangre De Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges on its Western half , wide open plains to the East, and the cities of La Junta and Telluride on the Northern boundary. The region’s history is as varied as its landscape, including original inhabitants of Navajo, Apache, Cheyenne, Ute, Kiowa, and Comanche Nations, impacts of Spanish and other European Colonialism, early expansion of cattle ranching, and boom-and-bust cycles of mining and agricultural development.

The region attracts artists for several reasons. Some artists have deep ancestral ties to the land and remain there for connection to culture and family. Land use and building codes throughout Southern Colorado are less restrictive than the state’s urban areas, allowing artists to create homes and studio compounds that suit their needs and their budgets. More recently, rising housing costs in Colorado’s urban areas have encouraged an increasing number of creatives to seek affordable opportunities in further reaches of the state.
