The intersections of Pleasant Street and Main Street, as well as the area at Water Street connecting to Beacon Street West, establish the original area referred to as Bank Square. Belknap Savings Bank was located here in 1831, which gave the name to the area. In 1902, the Eagle Hotel, the Unitarian Church with its magnificent steeple, and the gorgeous Moulton Opera House were the anchor businesses. It was regularly the center for political rallies, firemen musters, and parades. For many years, the city Christmas tree was placed in Bank Square.
