1. Introduction

Hello, I’m Dr. Morgan Grefe, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Historical Society. I’d like to welcome you to the John Brown House Museum, the premier 18th-century historic house museum in Rhode Island. As you take note of the grandeur of this house on your tour today, remember to keep in mind this was in fact a home, where families shared their meals, paid their bills, and lived out their lives. You’ll learn about the different families who called this their home, each of whom left their mark on the structure that you see today. I hope that you enjoy your visit with us and take advantage of the other sites and programs that the Rhode Island Historical Society has to offer, including the RIHS Library and the Museum of Work and Culture in Woonsocket.
