Footsteps of the Apostles: St. Paul in Athens

Welcome to Athens—one of the great cultural and intellectual centers of the ancient world. As we walk these ancient streets, we’re not merely exploring extraordinary ruins—we’re tracing the footsteps of the Apostle Paul himself. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Paul stood here among statues of gods and schools of philosophers, proclaiming the “unknown God” to ancient Athenians.

In Acts 17, we read that Paul arrived in Athens, was stirred by the city’s idols, and engaged daily in the Agora with both Jews and Gentiles. He was eventually brought to the Areopagus—right near the base of the Acropolis—where he delivered one of the most famous speeches in the New Testament. As we walk through these archaic spaces, we’ll consider both the grandeur of ancient Greece and the boldness of early Christian witness that challenged the ideas which shaped history—not with force, but with faith in the risen Christ.

Hi, I’m Dr. David Bosworth, Professor of New Testament at Colorado Christian University and Educational Travel Specialist with Greek Bible Tours. I first travelled to Greece in 2004, visiting Athens, Delphi and Corinth. The experience was so impactful on my faith journey that I kept coming back, for over 20 years now. I wanted others to be able to experience a deeper understanding of the Christian faith through their own visit to Greece. In 2011, Greek Bible Tours was birthed in a small office in Koropi, Greece in order to help believers learn more about the Bible by visiting the land of the Bible. The offices of Greek Bible Tours are located in Denver, Colorado. We coordinate with AMG International, in a ‘business as mission’ partnership to support the ongoing work of the gospel in Greece.

This downloadable audio tour will guide you through the Athenian Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, highlighting the ways in which the Apostle Paul interacted with the Athenians while he visited the city on his second missionary journey. If you have not yet purchased the tour, please click here to obtain the unlock code. The tour is $25 plus $7 per additional device.

You will also need to purchase admission tickets to the venues featured in this tour. Tickets to the Acropolis Museum are available at the museum entrance. For the archaeological site, timed-entry tickets are now required in order to enhance the visitor experience. Select a specific date and time slot for your visit and purchase the “Acropolis & Slopes” ticket. The most convenient and reliable source for ticket purchase is the official Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports website (www.hhticket.gr). Ticket offices are also located at both the western entrance and the south slope entrance. However, during peak season, lines can be very long, especially at the main entrance on the west side.

Once you have purchased the tour and your venue tickets, proceed to the first point of interest on the tour, the New Acropolis Museum.
