Grounds and Cemetery Part 1

  • You are welcome to head across the street to the Cemetary and listen to the next few sections of the tour. You can however, just listen to the cemetary tour without viewing where Frank and Mary are burried.

  •
  • When the Taylors bought the undeveloped swaths of Kalamazoo, what existed there was abundant oak savannahs. This had been managed by local Potawatomi using prescribed fire, which allowed them to travel without dense undergrowth afoot. Whether there are older, unmarked burials here remains a mystery in local whispers. Some wonder if the land is cursed, from earlier, more chaotic forces than the spirits of Frank and Mary.

  •
  • In 1838 James Taylor, a recently emigrated Scotsman and local wealthy celery flats founder and benefactor, bought the land of the castle and surrounding parcels, the high ridge overlooking the dearly departed at Mountain Home cemetery. Walk the grounds and you’ll see the language of Victorian mourning carved into stone. Gothic revival monuments, weeping willows, deep grassy valleys and ridges, towering obelisks, and angelic figures stand amongst the graves of the Hendersons, Upjohns, Gilmores, a large area for the Taylor clan, and many other notable families. The giant cemetery to this day contains reports of witching hour seances and rituals by visitors.
