Continue on Belvedere to Grattan Street, cross to the east side of Belvedere, and turn right to head uphill.
At 466 Belvedere are two Chinese elms from East Asia – the scientific name is Ulmus parvifolia. Of the 35 different species of elms, the Chinese elm is by far the most common in San Francisco, and the two at this address have been lovingly cared for by the owner. Chinese elms are noted for their beautiful bark, which comes off in puzzle-piece shapes. Just next door at 472 Belvedere is another elm - this one is a European elm, but I’m not sure of the species – European elms are very hard to tell apart, and they also hybridize with one another, which makes them even harder to identify.
