At the heart of this exhibit stands a boxcar, painstakingly created to mirror those the Nazis employed to transport Jews to concentration camps during the Holocaust. This grim relic is designed to hold up to 40 individuals; however, historical records inform us that Nazis would commonly force upwards of 300 or even 400 terrified individuals into such a confined space, providing little to no sanitation or ventilation. Each person in this ordeal had a story, a life, a name - they were someone. To honor these individuals, portraits were commissioned, each one rooted in extensive research and resources from our synagogue and beyond. These biographies can be found within a small box accompanying the display.
