Urban Wetlands

Further along the edge of the Duck Pond is the Wetlands Trail, including informative signage and the Waterplants Sculptures.

Wetlands, including those in Centennial Park play important ecological roles. Fungi and bacteria, present in ponds and swamps, break down waste, producing organic carbon and nutrients for other plants and animals to use. Ponds provide breeding, nesting and feeding habitat for waterbirds, frogs, insects, fish, eels and turtles.

All wetland inhabitants rely on each other for survival. In a balanced system, there are enough plants for the herbivore to feed on, enough herbivores for the carnivores to feed on and enough dead organisms for the decomposers, which feed on decaying waste.
