On a pole to your left (west) is a tree swallow nesting box. The Preserve encourages tree swallows to nest by installing nest boxes on poles near water. Tree swallows are cavity nesters, and they can be found at the Preserve year round. Ideally, the forest trees would be of differing ages, including old dead trees, called snags, filled with cavities. You will also see larger boxes for wood duck nests.
