1. Welcome to Castle in the Clouds

Hello, I’m Charles Clark, Executive Director of the Castle Preservation Society. I’d like to welcome you to Castle in the Clouds, part of the National Historic Landmark Lucknow Estate.

Lucknow Estate was the grand retirement estate of Thomas Plant and his wife, Olive Dewey Plant. Lucknow Mansion is a unique example of New England Arts & Crafts architecture. The design of the home and its simple interior décor place emphasis on the surroundings, rather than the house.

Despite this, the home was outfitted with state-of-the-art technologies, providing a very comfortable and luxurious lifestyle. The Lucknow Estate was designed to afford the best of all worlds, but at its heart it was a home – a place where the Plants found security, relaxation, solace, and many opportunities to commune with nature.

I hope you take the opportunity to explore the mansion in its entirety today. If you have questions between tour stops, please don’t hesitate to ask one of our friendly museum interpreters. Thank you for visiting, and enjoy your tour.
