From the Staircase Hall use the double doorway to access the Mountain Balcony; please be careful crossing the raised threshold.
From the Staircase Hall, you can also access one of the home’s outdoor living spaces; a pleasant, covered balcony with views of the Ossipee Mountains. The peaks seen here were once owned by Tom and Olive Plant. These include Mount Roberts, Mount Faraway, Mount Shaw, Black Snout, Turtleback Mountain, and Bald Knob. The Lucknow Estate spanned from these peaks all the way to Lake Winnipesaukee. The Plants owned roughly two miles of shoreline.
This balcony also provides a good view of the home’s complex system of roof timbers and tiles. The tiles are all made of terra cotta and each timber featured scalloping to accentuate the rustic and hand-crafted appearance of the home. In 2015, many of these timbers were replaced as part of our ongoing restoration of the mansion. All of the replacement timbers were similarly hand-scalloped by skilled restoration carpenters to blend seamlessly with the originals.
When the Plants lived here, this space would have been appointed with wicker furniture, making it a perfectly comfortable space to relax and enjoy the majesty of the natural setting.
