Cascade Community Cemetery - James Fagan

James Fagan, a devoted public servant and respected elder of the Cascade community, lived a life marked by faith, family, and a commitment to his neighbors. Born in 1833 in Kilkeel, Ireland, James immigrated to the United States in 1855 at the age of 22, seeking a new life full of opportunity. Settling in the Fillmore settlement just outside Cascade, he quickly became an integral part of the growing community.

In 1858, James met Elizabeth Morrow, and the two were married three years later. Together, they had 11 children, though tragically, four passed away before James. Despite these losses, the Fagan family was central to life in Fillmore and Cascade. James balanced his responsibilities as a farmer with his role as the dedicated postmaster for the Cascade area, serving tirelessly to ensure the community’s communication needs were met.

Faith played a significant role in James’s life. From the founding of Cascade’s Presbyterian Church, he served as a church elder, a role he held with honor and dedication until his passing. His leadership and spiritual guidance were invaluable to the congregation.

In 1905, James decided to retire from farming and moved from Fillmore into Cascade itself. Two years later, in 1907, he married Mamie Croston, following the passing of his beloved first wife, Elizabeth, in 1903. James found joy in his later years, continuing to contribute to the community while enjoying the company of his new wife and family.

On February 11, 1921, James Fagan, then 88 years old, visited the local barber shop, feeling in good health and high spirits. Later that evening, he experienced chest pain and decided to lie down to rest. His wife, Mamie, went to prepare something to ease his discomfort, but by the time she returned, James had peacefully passed away while trying to find a more comfortable position. His sudden death came as a profound shock to the community, which mourned the loss of a steadfast and beloved figure.

James Fagan’s legacy as a family man, public servant, and spiritual leader remains a cornerstone of Cascade’s history. His life is a testament to the impact of dedication and kindness on a growing community.”
