Cascade Community Cemetery - George Grimes Banghart

On October 10, 1846, Caleb and Louisa Bucknam donated the land for what would become Cascade’s cemetery, with the official start marked on February 27, 1849. In its early days, all sites were dug by hand, and the cemetery was divided by denomination, with separate associations overseeing each section. Over time, the cemetery was split into two boards that still manage different sections today, preserving the rich history of this community.

George G. Banghart stands out as one of Cascade’s most influential early merchants and community leaders. Born on February 11, 1817, in Belvidere, New Jersey, George faced hardship early in life, losing his father at the age of seven. At 15, he ventured to Michigan, where he began building his future. He trained as a baker, gained valuable experience as a store clerk, and by 20, formed a business partnership in Pontiac, Michigan.

Ambitious and hardworking, George became the sole owner of a bakery and grocery store shortly after turning 21. However, the financial panic of 1837 forced him to start over. Demonstrating resilience, he established a new grocery store in 1838, only to see it destroyed by fire the following year. Unfazed, George rented a new location and expanded into general merchandising. This marked the beginning of his long and successful career as a merchant.

In 1841, George brought his entrepreneurial spirit to Cascade, Iowa, where he started with several hundred dollars’ worth of dry goods, which he sold out of Caleb Bucknam’s hotel. Over time, he established himself as the leading businessman in the growing community. His ventures weren’t without challenges, but George proved his mettle time and again. In 1852, his store was struck by lightning, triggering a powder keg explosion that caused $2,000 in damage and blew out a wall. Despite being stunned while sitting at his desk, he emerged unscathed and rebuilt.

George married Eliza A. Bucknam, daughter of Sheriff Caleb Bucknam of Michigan, on February 11, 1838—his 21st birthday. The couple had ten children, seven of whom survived into adulthood. Their children pursued diverse careers, including merchants, grain buyers, and educators. Some followed in George’s footsteps, such as his son Oscar, who became his business partner in Cascade.

George’s impact on Cascade extended beyond business. He played a vital role in the town’s development, holding positions such as township supervisor and contributing to various civic projects. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Chicago, Bellevue, Cascade & Western Narrow Gauge Railroad, serving as a director from its inception and even as vice president and treasurer. His investments and leadership helped solidify Cascade’s place as a growing regional hub.

Beyond commerce and public service, George was a staunch supporter of the community. Though not affiliated with any particular church later in life, he generously contributed to the construction of local churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, where his wife was a member. He also maintained an 800-acre farm on the edge of Cascade, complete with tenant houses and a comfortable family residence.

Politically, George identified as a conservative Democrat. During the Civil War, he supported the Union, echoing Stephen Douglas’s belief that, in times of crisis, there could only be patriots and traitors. His principles and actions earned him the respect of his peers, even through periods of national upheaval and local hardship.

Known for his tireless work ethic, business acumen, and commitment to Cascade, George G. Banghart left an enduring legacy. His life serves as a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and community spirit.
